Find answers to common questions about organ donation
Organ donation is the process of surgically removing an organ or tissue from one person (the organ donor) and placing it into another person (the recipient). Transplantation is necessary because the recipient's organ has failed or has been damaged by disease or injury.
People of all ages and medical histories should consider themselves potential donors. Your medical condition at the time of death will determine what organs and tissues can be donated. A healthy person can become a living donor by donating a kidney, or a part of the liver, lung, intestine, blood, or bone marrow.
You can register as an organ donor by filling out our registration form online. You can also indicate your decision to be a donor on your driver's license, which can be done when you obtain or renew your license at the DMV. Additionally, you can sign up through the National Organ Donor Registry.
There is no age limit for organ donation. The decision to use your organs is based on strict medical criteria, not age. Organs have been successfully transplanted from donors in their 70s and 80s. The oldest donor on record was 92 years old.
Most major religions in India and around the world support organ donation and transplantation. They see it as a final act of love and generosity toward others. If you're unsure, we encourage you to speak with your religious leader.
